SJB Group Industrial Services
SJB Group, LLC is a multi-discipline firm based in Baton Rouge and serves Louisiana and the surrounding
states. The firm was established in 1953 and has grown to provide a robust menu of services including
topographic and boundary land surveying; 3D laser scanning with mobile and drone LiDAR; subsurface
utility engineering; land planning and parks/recreation; commercial, residential and multi-use center
development; municipal infrastructure for roads, parking, drainage, water, wastewater, and natural
gas utilities and pipelines; permitting; construction scheduling (CPM) for private and public works; and
forensic analysis and testimony for the engineering and construction markets.
Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) is a highly-effective and non-destructive
service that provides accurate locating and mapping of underground utilities
and subsurface assets. Using a light and mobile vacuum excavation truck, SJB
Group dentifies the precise horizontal and vertical locations of utility lines, pipes,
cables, buried concrete, and other unseen objects. Our service eliminates
potential conflicts and leads to more informed design and construction
decisions, which saves our clients time and money. Most importantly, this
practice protects life and property. We stand behind SAFETY.
Natural Gas Distribution & Pipeline Compliance Support
When it comes to utility system projects, SJB Group can help you play by the rules and regulations and
still keep your project on track. With our roots in utility management and operations, SJB Group is very
familiar with utility requirements, codes, and regulations. Understanding how regulators think helps us
interpret their guidelines. Over the years, we have honed these skills to ensure that plans and designs
for utility expansions and upgrades are practical and affordable while complying with the fine print.
SJB Group has the experience and ability to understand the capital costs associated with projects,
and we work to develop the most effective alternative–both immediate and long-term–especially with
regards to maintenance.
SJB Group knows how budget cuts may affect not only the quality of your project, but also the longterm
environmental impact. We work closely with our clients to understand their goals and objectives,
and then we provide an array of alternatives to help them make informed decisions on everything from
materials and their construction approach to long-term maintenance issues as well as the relocation of
utility systems caused by infrastructure or highway widening and improvement projects.
Our Distribution and Pipeline services include:
• Regulatory Consulting/Auditing Services
• Third Party Damage Investigations
• O&M/DIMP/Emergency Plans and Drills
• Construction Management Services
• Engineering/Design/Mapping Services/ GIS
• Damage Prevention/Public Awareness Programs

Mobile Lidar Scanning & Videography
Mobile LiDAR scanning is an innovative solution that uses a combination of LiDAR sensors, cameras,
GPS technology and a mobile platform (car, ATV, drone, helicopter, etc.) that collects data points
much faster than conventional surveying methods. This method is not only faster, but it is safer, allows
for better access to hard to reach areas, and is non-invasive.
Why LiDAR?
• Crews avoid exposure to potentially dangerous circumstances such as busy intersections and highways.
• Lessens disruption to general public.
• Increases accessibility to remote or hazardous environments.
• Incorporates GPS and survey controls for accuracy.
• Cost effective and rapid.
• We offer terrestrial LiDAR scanning and Aerial LiDAR scanning.
Terrestrial Lidar Scanning
While the construction industry is often considered to be a slow adopter
of new technology, design and construction professionals are challenging
themselves to build projects faster and cheaper with the use of technologies
like BIM, tablets, and custom-designed apps. A less publicized technology
in the adoption phase is 3D laser scanning. Engineering and consulting firms
are recognizing the benefits laser scanning can bring to their clients and
operations.
What is 3D Laser Scanning? The concept is simply this. 3D laser scanning
technology uses a line of laser light to digitally capture dimensions and spatial
relationships of an object. The point cloud image that results is an accurate
depiction of the object, which may be scanned from as far several hundred
meters. Accuracy of data points collected can be less than 5mm at speeds
from several thousand to several hundred thousand points per second.
Density of the point cloud affects the speed. A very large object is scanned in one scan, multiple scans
from different lines of sight can be linked together to complete the point cloud image. Data form a 3D
point cloud may be exported into CAD and BIM programs to general 2D CAD drawings or a 3D model.
The detail produced in these scans is much greater than more conventional survey methods. Point
clouds also can improve design by analyzing clashes between newly designed elements and existing
conditions or by evaluation alternative designs prior to construction. These scans reduce project costs
by up to 7 percent and schedule times of up to 10 percent on industrial projects. Scanning can take
hours or a few days depending on the scale of the site compared to traditional collection methods.
